Big Easy Summer
Desean Jefferson, 11, center, plays with his cousins Ja'Shawn Davis, 3, and Janiya Davis, 6, in front of their home in the Treme neighborhood in New Orleans, La. The children attended Holy Faith Temple Baptist Church summer camp where they made arts and crafts and played games. They had little else to do the rest of the summer in the neighborhood that still bares scars from Hurricane Katrina. —Matthew Hinton
We asked Matthew Hinton to photograph a New Orleans Recreation Development Commission camp and the surrounding hurricane-ravaged Treme neighborhood for a cover story examining the city’s efforts at preventing summer learning loss. We were thrilled when he emailed this photo after his first shoot. “Is this image, kind of what you are looking for?” he asked. It certainly was.
