My day with students from the Global Kids program started with a 2-mile urban hike from the nearest subway stop to Marine Park under a hot summer sun, followed by a flurry of excitement upon locating a geocache hidden inside an old Fire Department call box. Encouraged by their initial success, the group spent the balance of the day searching for additional geocaches, one of which led them into a bug-infested salt marsh. By end of day, the heat and high humidity had taken its toll on the group. Like an oasis in the desert, a playground with a water fountain appeared, as the group stopped to map out their routes home. I was tired and ready to put my cameras away when I saw one of the students, Brianna Sears, sheepishly make her way over to the fountain. She was a little embarrassed because only little kids were enjoying the cool of the fountain’s spray, but the weather was just too hot to pass up the opportunity. —Emile Wamsteker
